Usually when a hitter is late and popping up or flying out, his stroke is too long. This is caused by dropping his hands behind him as he approaches the ball. Your son probably has what we call a loop in his stroke. Our research shows that a loop stroke will travel as far as 96 before contacting the baseball, as opposed to the short stroke which will only travel 36. By dropping his hands as he goes to the ball, his bat head is getting under every fast ball.

Practice these baseball hitting tips and baseball hitting drills from our Super 8 Hitting System.

We clearly outline this in our video analysis videos… the basic problem that you need to resolve is to eliminate the arcing on the back side.

Power-10 drills used in batting practices will train hitters to hit each ball well, making practices more meaningful. Hitters will concentrate more on hitting the balls hard and sharply, rather than hitting everything deep. As you see below, this method is proven by improved batting averages.

If a hitter is not at that level, he needs to work for that. If time permits, players can do more than one Power-10. With these batting drills, they look forward to the challenge of getting better each time.

http://www.learnbaseballhitting.com/linear-rotational-hitting-dvd.html Learn Rotational Hitting the right way from Baseball Coach Joe Brockhoff and the Super 8 Hitting System. Explosive Rotational Hitting.

A few years ago, coming off of a less than great year, A-Rod worked on his stroke with a hitting instructor during the off-season. According to the instructor, there were two major concepts that needed improvement. One was to get the front foot down quicker, as he was getting caught by not getting in position to hit because of this. And while he still has a high leg kick today, he is better at getting it down quicker.

Also another major problem is that he was not rotating or turning his body quick enough. And I liked the analogy that was given to compare the hitting turn to the pivotal turn of the ice skater. So get the stride down, keep the hands close to the body, and pivot quickly. This is good rotational hitting instruction. And A-Rod went on to have an outstanding year as a result.

So the key point is body rotation, with hands close to the body, popping the hips quickly. Therefore the main rotation in hitting is not at all in the hands. The main rotation is in the hips, and by having the hands close to the body, that rotation is explosive.

My personal advice on the stride is this: 6 inches. A glide step. Get the foot down. Do not make it complicated. The stride merely gets us into position to pivot. The hands do not commit first to the ball, but travel as the body rotates, and then the hands will go linear in a snapping action to make contact with the ball. This truly allows for the hitter to wait for the last moment to make contact and is the pure definition on “waiting”. This also allows for the hitter to track each pitch accurately, allowing for best contact with the pitch.

The bat does not swing level. It tracks the level of the pitch by rotating the hands accordingly. When the hitter makes his pivot, and is in the Drive Position, he now has the option of hitting a high pitch, low pitch, or he doesn’t have to hit the ball at all. It’s like cheating. Just rotate the hands accordingly.

Remember the hands do not drop they rotate to hit the pitch. This is shown by in our new Rotational hitting video. The hands go linear to make contact, and then they extend. If a hitter is extending oncontact, he is overusing his arms. He is arm swinging and losing power. The body drives, and then the hands take over the stroke. Then the extension occurs. We consider this technique to be much better than either rotational hitting or linear, and will allow for you to maximize your hitting ability.

Coach Brock here with another question from a parent:

Q - How do I keep a hitter ( my son ) from throwing his shoulders to the ball. He is hitting ok but weak.

Thanks Again

Bud

A - It is important that the front shoulder stay closed and does not open until after the stride is completed. This usually is a result of high tension in the hitter or else he may be trying to muscle the ball.

The first thing to consider is that the shoulders do not hit the ball. They are not at all involved with the stride. Teach him to soften the shoulders during his preliminary swings.

After he gets into the batter’s box, before the ball is pitched, have him bring up his shoulders and then release them to release the tension. Remember, no energy in the shoulders…just hips and hands.

This is included as part of our full baseball hitting tips, Video #5:

Another good baseball hitting drill is the overcorrection drill that is demonstrated on the Combos Video #4 and on the back of the poster. This drill forces the shoulders to stay in place.

Using the mat drills with the SpeedBat™ is always good for helping the keep the shoulders back and soft.

It is a must that he keeps his energy out of the shoulders in order for him to maximize his hitting ability.

We also have some baseball hitting videos that can help out too.

It’s real important to understand the idea that we try and teach in our hitting. It’s the physical activity which will always start with the largest muscle mass. Take the stride out of the feet, and use it in a large muscle mass and use the hips. When you are doing this, there will be less of a chance for the feet to overact.

You now have a better chance to maintain control of the stride. Thus, we strongly encourage that you stride with the front hip, and allow the feet to follow. The stride should only be about 6 inches.

For this reason, here are the “7 Deadly Misconceptions in Hitting” and baseball hitting drills

to go along with it.

Stay AWAY from these!

Misconception #1 - Swing Level. The fact is that one of the worst

mistakes a hitter can make is trying to keep his bat level as he goes

to the pitch.

#2 - Get The Back Elbow Up. If we had to throw a punch, would we

have the elbow up? If so, it would NOT be an effective punch. The elbow

needs to support the hands. It cannot do this if it is above them.

with the ball, his top hand is in adduction (like a hammer) under the bat,

when the bat is coming out of extension and is coming around to the opposite

is that the hands require body support during the hitting stroke. The farther

Hi, my name is Matt. I am a high school baseball player and I have used the the super eight hitting system. I am just writing to ask a question about how to improve my swing plane. When I was younger, my coaches told me to try to hit the top of the ball and pound the ball ino the ground. I didn’t really know mutch about hitting at the time, so I took their word for it. I spent years drilling these ”wood-chopping” hitting mechanics and have developed some bad habits. Now, whenever I make contact I consistantly hit the ball into the gorund and I have trouble getting line drive elevation. I was wondering if you could write back and explain how to improve my swing plane and give me some drills that i could do to help me out. thank you for your time.

Here’s another question from a coach that I received the other day:

Q - I have a youngster on my team that we are having a hard time making him keep his head in the swing. When he finishes he is looking in the stands and nearly screws into the ground. He is a very good athlete and one of the best in the league but, he has developed these horrible habits. Do you have any specific drills to help break him. I have tried a ball on the ground in front of the plate to concentrate on to finish the swing. We have worked on the fence, on the tee and soft toss. He seems to improve then when he gets to the plate back to the same bad habits. Need your help?

Mike

A - Hi, Mike

Thanks for the question. It appears that the reason that he hits well is that he is turning well and that’s good. But he needs to make his head independent of his body turn. It must not pull out and his eyes must remain horizontal, like reading a book. If the head tilts, this controls the body.

Practice pivots while bringing the head into the hit zone. Another drill is that during batting practice, have him stand without a bat and hold his head as through in a vice. He can take dry swings while you hold his head in place. Practice over and over, turning the body, with the head looking into the hit zone. Another good drill is to take batting practice just taking the pitch with what is called a full take. He will load and stride and the head reads the pitch all the way to the catcher. This is the only movement. Hands stay back, with no pivot of the body. You can also place an object on the first base line and hit would look back at the object after he swings.

Refer to our Super 8 Hitting System #5 DVD (Hitting Agenda) for a full explanation of these baseball hitting tips and drills.
